Alternative Brass B: 2 Cornets, Eb Tenor Horn and Euphonium
Whitworth Street West in Manchester was once the heart of the docklands – rows of warehouses along the Rochdale canal. The wonderful Victorian brick buildings have seen a number of different uses since, including a period when the street was central to Manchester's “clubland” - in particular the famous and now demolished Hacienda night club. It's over 20 years since the club closed its doors, but the spirit of the city's dancefloor culture lives on in other locations. Something of that idea of “industrial re-purposing” underlies the composition of this piece. The traditional brass band instruments – which will always have an immediate cultural connection with Northern working-class music making – are re-purposed to be the horn section of a “Madchester” rave.
